Throughout the ages many studies have addressed the “making of architecture” as an action both physical and mental. However, although most of them admitted the great influence of buildings on human body and sensorial perception, only few acknowledged the importance of architecture for intellect evolution.

Dom Hans van der Laan offered contemporary architects new lenses to look at artifact creation. He discovered a proportional system, named by himself Plastic Number, and argued in favor of a “cognitive value” of proportion. In so doing, he went back to the origins of human making.

The rational humanistic spirit, purified from any form of mysticism, shapes Hans van der Laan’s theory and work, foreseeing latest interdisciplinary studies between arts and cognitive science. This article examines the cognitive value of proportion inspired by the plastic number theory.
